Malaga

Malaga is one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded by Phoenician traders around 2,800 years ago. Its most visible layer, though, is the one that arrived much later and stayed for nearly eight centuries.

Malaga

A short history

The Alcazaba fortress, begun in the eleventh century under Muslim rule, still looks down on the port from its hill, with a Roman theatre uncovered at its foot. It belongs to the wider story of Al-Andalus: Cordoba, Granada and Seville were under Islamic rule for nearly eight hundred years, until 1492. That period is not a footnote here — it is in the tiled courtyards, the horseshoe arches, and a great many place names that a visitor from the Arab world will read without translation.

Why travellers love it

It opens onto the whole of Andalusia rather than just a beach. Granada and the Alhambra are a straightforward day trip, Seville and Cordoba are a little further, and the old town itself has become one of the better places to eat in southern Spain.

Before you go

Spain is in the Schengen area, so most visitors need either visa-free entry or a Schengen visa arranged in advance — check well before booking, as appointments can take weeks. Come in spring or early autumn: April to June and September to October are warm without the August crowds. Book Alhambra tickets before you fly, not when you arrive; they routinely sell out.
